Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve

Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve

For nature and birding buffs, the Maurice River Bluffs Nature Preserve is a beautifully scenic destination in the Millville area. Currently preserved by The Nature Conservancy, it is 535 acres of stopover habitat for many species of birds, including bald eagles, osprey, and songbirds. The Maurice River Bluffs not only offers many opportunities for bird watching and viewing wildlife, there’s also five hiking trails and even a mountain biking trail for cycling enthusiasts.

The Maurice River Bluffs preserve gets its name from the bluffs overlooking the 35.4 mile Maurice River. Its location makes it an ideal stopover destination for migrating birds, and it is a haven for many freshwater ponds and plant life such as wild rice marshes. For visiting enthusiasts, there is a 6-mile trail system that features a 35-foot long bridge, and steps and rails through steep areas. Visitors can relax on a bench or enjoy lunch in any of several picnic areas.

If you decide to visit, be sure to make a stop at the visitor kiosk, which features helpful information and large trail maps. Make a stop at the floating dock for a clear view of two bald eagle nests, enjoy an incredible view of the Maurice River from the 50-foot high overlooking bluffs, and check out the seasonal features, such as the osprey nests from March through September, and the Pink Lady’s Slipper Orchids in May and June. You can even see an old homestead built in the 1700s!
